The City of London Climate Action Team has published both a Climate Action Plan and a Biodiversity Action Plan. Alongside this, over the past three years, Golden Lane residents have suggested changes to the estate to aid the move to net zero and increased biodiversity. This map lists suggestions which bring together ideas from Imagine events, Golden Lane Action Days and workshops run as part of Young Golden Lane project. It is hoped that the City-wide Action Plans can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of each of the City of London estates including Golden Lane.

THINKING BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLIMATE ACTION PLAN FOR GOLDEN LANE ESTATE

1. Keep people warm and reduce energy bills by installing double glazing and insulation in all housing

2. Keep people cool and tackle the effects of overheating by installing blinds

3. Save energy by ensuring that communal lights are all energy saving and can be turned off during the day

4. Save water by using rainwater to water plants

5. Ensure that there are places for residents and visitors to recycle waste, repair broken equipment and to make new items

6. Save energy and reduce communal bills by installing renewable energy heating in flats, community buildings and in the leisure centre and add solar panels to all the flat roofs

7. Make the streets around Golden Lane healthier and greener by planting trees and shrubs, by removing unnecessary car parking and by creating a ‘school street’

8. Remove unnecessary parking in the space between Great Arthur House and the Community Centre and restore it to the architects’ original plans for a pedestrian community square

9. Increase biodiversity by planting wildflowers in areas like the neglected green spaces of Basterfield Lawn, the former paddling pool space and around the tennis courts and by adding planting and green walls around the pond

10. Bring nature into the city for young people living on the estate by creating child-friendly allotments, a wildflower meadow, a treehouse and a greenhouse for young people

11. Celebrate the great design at the heart of the estate and the value of horticulture by planting and opening the Great Arthur House roof garden

12. Ensure that the planned major works, ongoing repairs, the improvements linked to the C3 Social Housing Regulator judgement and the plans for the leisure centre meet the targets for net zero and biodiversity set out in the City of London Climate Action Plan and Biodiversity Action Plan
